Well the PDF says this:
CAUTION!
The switcher IC is expensive. Incorrect installation and use of the patcher can result in damage to the IC and replacement is expensive and at your cost!
Do not exceed the power supply voltages of +/-12 and 5V.
Do not plug the power cable in incorrectly.
The voltage range of signals that can be patch is +/-12V. Do not exceed.
Maybe this gives some clue as to the chip used ... it's an expensive chip which gets blown up when you put in signals outside than +V / -V .. hmm, on second thoughts this doesn't narrow it down too much.
