Hi Dan:

You did not mention what electronic experience you have. If you are an
absolute beginner, a kit is a good place to start. Paia, Blacet and MOTM
make good to excellent kits with great documentation.

If you have more experience, there are sources for bare PCBs,
schematics, etc. These kinds of projects require a great deal more time
and experience to get working, but they can be inexpensive if you want
to spend time and not money. I'm sure others will point you to these
sources.

Probably the favorite type of module to start with is a filter, as you
can run any audio source through it and have quite a bit of fun.
