my guess is luck.
Since the 192 lopass used a photocell/Lamp combo and had no CV input. I
assume he didn't include a CV in because the lamp/photocell were so
slow. The 292 was the next logical step after the 192. I think he
rejoiced at the improvement in response speed. When it wasn't as fast as
transistors, he learned to love the sound it had.
He certainly could have gone back to descrete transistor VCAs and
Filters like on the 100 series.
Who cares in the end. He must have loved them. they are even in the 400
and 700 series.
