If you NEED isolation the transformer is the best solution.
For better frequency response (ESP. for synths) the direct
drive is better.
Low Z mixer inputs are usually 600 - 1K ohms. Most line level
outs could drive these directly... and you COULD just ground one
input of the XLR and drive the other (single ended) ...
