Er... yes... and no

You CAN use a matched pair instead of the uA726...

but you (very much) DO NEED temperature control, or
compensation for a good VCO... or your oscillator
will go out of tune / scale all the time.

You can use
1) Heated Pair (a'la uA726)
2) Temperature Compensating Resistor (tempco)
3) Thermistor (not common but can work...)
4) Temperature Compensation (electronic method)

And all have been made to work.
