Try netscape communicator 4.xx (www.netscape.com/download) - browser's a bit old, but the email client is nice.
Or mozilla (www.mozilla.org) - don't bother with netscape 6, it's the same as mozilla, but a version or so behind.

Both are free and relatively safe from viruses, although if you open an attachment, ignore the warning, and execute it, then for sure you could still get a virus.
