I can think of a couple of off-the-shelf distortion devices that used red
LEDs for the clipping component:  the Fender M-80 guitar amps, and one of
the little Danelectro mini stompboxes.  On the little Dano pedal, the
plastic case is so thin, you can see something in there lighting up every
time you hit a note!
