You don't want a 4050. Many people have 4050s and still can't
translate from low to high.

what you WANT is a MC14504 Hex buffer / level shifter... which can
translate in both directions.

I don't know if there are any sources of this chip today... and you might
consider some of the Panasonic transistor packages that have the resistors
built in....

A ULN2804 with a sip pullup package is OK if inverting operation is desired.
