Yeah, the Fender Stratocaster "Elite" model had a dummy coil mounted
under the pickguard for cancelling hum. This was a short-lived
unpopular variation that, besides the shape, had very little in common
with the standard Strat. You can find some photos of it if you do a
Google search.
The first instrument with a dummy coil that I know of was the Alembic
"Hippy Sandwich" bass. This is the instrument that Stanley Clark made
famous. It has two single coil pickups and a third dummy pickup
mounted between them. The Alembics were also the first high end
("coffee table") basses and the first to feature active electronics
and parametric (2 pole, variable Q, variable F) tone controls. They
