This is a good idea.  

I had something like that happen once while I was developing an additional
VCO for mine.  The load on the power supply was too much and the +5 supply
would dip too far below 5 volts, crashing the firmware.  Using a separate
supply fixed it.  You might be wise to check +5 at the power pins of the
firmware chips to make sure it's all there.
