I just built my girlfriend a little light controlled synth based on a wacky
idea I had. I used 4 simple square/triangle oscillators with cadmium
sulfide cells in addition to the pot that controls the current going to the
oscillator cap. Each of these oscillators has an LED at its out put as well
as the audio output. The audio outputs are mixed through a summing node and
then invertered (through an inverter). The LED's are mounted in a square on
the front panel. The cadmium sulfide cells are mounted in a larger square
outside the LED's so that the light from the LED (output of one oscillator)
is controlling the frequency of the next oscillator, which is controlling
the next, which is controlling the first one. It can sit and play itself
for hours... Especially interesting is when the 4 are set to just below
audio frequency when the LED's are off, then when they turn on they push
each other up into audio and set off a chain reaction. Anyway, it seemed
like this idea could really be expanded upon for lots of interesting
effects!!
