i see a few things in the future:
1. artists have the power now to make their own music, produce and record
it "at home" with good results (not the "demo home studio" of yesteryear
that was used to get someone else to pay the bill for a "real recording").
2. a good number of artists are willing to give "the public" free access to
their work...at least as long as there is no "corporate fat cat" making $$
off of it. (i will almost always play a gig for free if there is free
admision, and no one is making money).
3. there will be those who try to package "freely released music" and make
money on it....it will be the job of an artist not to make material
available to them (except where it suits the artists need to be publicized).
4. i doubt that ascap or bmi will be serving the small, independant
musician for very long....once independant musicians really hold their own
copyrights and intrests, then there is no reason for venues presenting such
music to pay bmi or ascap...unless they are presenting "industry supported
mainstream big money music"...there will always be a market for brittney
spears and michale jackson style music/concerts...this is what bmi and ascap
will focus on.
5. in the end, i think an artist will make $$ by releasing some material
for free to the public (and possibly the corporate profit makers), and by
selling "performances"..ie, the material never exists as a recording that is
available except for "live performance" or an "exclusive presentation"...the
original digital recording never gets into the hands of anyone who would
copy/distribute it. this way, the artist gets paid directly from the venue,
and not by the bmi/ascap "pool" of fees.
just mho.
