Tip and ring swapped perhaps? The Yamaha expression pedal jacks I know
(DX7 for instance) have pedal potentiometer end at the tip and wiper at
the ring. Maybe on the older devices it's the other way round (hence the
warning not to plug anything in while the synth is powered up)? A
potentiometer gets easily fried when a voltage source is connected
between one end and wiper, if the wiper gets close enough to that end.

I like the Roland style better, with wiper to the tip, and a
short-circuit proof power supply at the ring. Instead of an expression
pedal you can plug in a foot switch with mono plug (shorting the power supply).
