It seems odd, but I have an old organ which indeed doesn't work without
its volume pedal connected. The reason is, believe it or not, the mains
transformer is in the pedal. I don't know if they did this to make the
pedal heavier, or to keep the transformer as far away as possible from
the reverb spring.
