I think they should be the same concerning easyness. Both family have lot of 
asm examples on the net and tutorials. You have to learn some assembly 
commands, install some softwares, and read the specs of the MCU.

Personnally i choosed an AVR because I found a schemo to build a programmer 
board for 15$. 
The Avr can be programmed on circuit if you manage to put some jumpers and a 
socket for the programmer.
