You can also use a dinosaur PC.  I've done similar
things (Actually even more complex) with a PC MIDI card
(any that can emulate the MPU-401 UART mode).  How about
keyboard portamento on a digital synth?  Using an old
PC, the smallest HD you can find (heck, even a diskette), 
DOS and a ISA PC MIDI card, you can load different 
programs for different purposes.

Get the Jim Conger book: "MIDI Programming in C".

I've used processors as slow as 286-12.  I'd bet you
might be able to find something for free, and a whole
lot faster.  Graphics adapter can be any, including mono.

Recycle a PC!
