Hi Ian..concerning the patch matrices ..the company
you are thinking about was called 'Sealectro' (they were UK based ..in
Portsmouth I believe).
They made the  matrices used by EMS.
They were then taken over by Canon-ITT I think, but dont make patch matrices
anymore.
Only current commercial source I am aware of are the Infolite ones you
mentioned  and the Swiss company
Ghielmetti (do a google on them to find their webpages/catalogue). These
come in various sizes, are wonderful quality ..but be prepared to pay $600+
for one!  Alternatively put a request on sdiy/AH for a second hand unit
..they do appear from time to time.

You definitely want a matrix/synth design that allows many->1  /  1-> many
routing  which the Maplin
does not allow as Tony mentioned, otherwise the main power of matrix
patching is simply lost.
