Yo,
I have dabbled in such. My thinking (loosely defined)
was to mimic hardware circuits in software. I used my
well-worn copy of Chamberlin's book, along with a
shelf of DSP references, and then got distracted.
Someday I hope to get back to it.
There is CSound, which is endlessly fun to play with.
Its a non-real time system for rendering sounds and
music. I modelled a 2-d pan based on delays with it.
