25 Hz used to be common in USA too in the early days. Can you imagine that!

Actually, I've always wondered about the 50Hz mains. I can see 60Hz because
you get one cycle per second, but who first came up with 50Hz? And why? Is
this another epic tale of battle between Edison and Tesla?
Just curious. Answers are limited to 50 words or less (60 words or less if
you live in a country with 60Hz utilities). ;)

Nah come on Terry...
I'm not touting the sonic merits of 60Hz over 50Hz....
just that 60hz is better, thats all. It allows you to use
smaller filter caps for the same ripple, does not throw a
magnetic field as far through a metal shield, and the higher
frequency is easier to attenuate in oh, lets say... one of
those noisy Oberheim Matrix 1000 power supplies.
The guys in the UK just don't like it that the colonies are
one up on them... ;^P
