[sdiy] Where to start?

Can anybody recommend a good book or webpage or any sort of resource
whatsoever for learning the essentials of analog audio type electronics?  I
know the basics of what components do what, but I am having trouble
understanding their significance in practical applications.  I'm willing to
invest the time and/or money into books or parts but it seems that
everything I look at is either very very basic or way over my head.
