Does slowing down the feed reel really slow down the capstan? I thought
when the feed reel is slowed down the tape begins to slip in relation to
the capstan. Perhaps lowering the force of the pinch roller (is this the
correct tern for this rubber wheel?) against the capstan would help.

Hmmm, with multiple tracks perhaps the through-zero thing can be done.
Of course varying the tape speed is pointless then, but the position of
one playback or record head could be varied. You'd need four heads then:
one fixed record/playback pair for track 1 and one record/playback pair
for track 2, where one of the heads can be moved.
