Hi Julian et al,
Some tips, warning: the end comes back to the beginning :)

1) For "single island" board it is just like designing a single sided PCB.
Making a drawing on (grit) paper first is usually a good idea.
Or use a drawing program with this basic pattern:

You can draw your "traces" using a fill tool.
It seems to work best to enlarge a few times.
Then first draw the IC pins with one color (black?) and
fill in the traces with a two other colors (E.g. two shades of red)
in same way the basic drawing uses two shades of gray.
Using two shades for the traces makes deleting traces much easier.

2) For "strip" board there is a program called "StripboardMagic".
(sorry no link, but google should do the trick)
It has a nice error check feature build in. Highly recommended!!!

3) Also worth to try is "pattern" board.

Although intended for 8052 type uC circuits this pattern is also handy for
analogue stuff.
The cool thing is that you have a good power structure laid out for you
already.

Blue is the GND, Red the positive- and Green the negative supply.
The IC are placed "over" the red and green traces.

4) But you could also layout a structure like above on normal
"single island" board.
This way you have a good start for the rest of your layout and more freedom
with the remaining islands.
