I currently have a P6 with all four 4042s dead. This does indeed cause
all manner of very strange audio effects on the final output. Remember
the acid leakage area is not neccesarily the area of trouble on the
board. The chemical reactions going on at the leakage point will affect
other parts of the circuit. Including, I think, the connections inside
the IC pakages of chips some way from the battery.
