[sdiy] (OT replacing halogen with LED?

hi all, I have a "laser-FX" unit. it's a halogen bulb that shines
though a 4 color gel thing (so the color can change as it runs) and
then bounces of a mirror that is connected to motors that are
activated by sound... the typical disco type thing. Problem is that
it's like 8 years old, and the original bulb has long since been
retired. I replaced it with one of the mini halogen bulbs, as I
couldn't find a direct replacement. The replacemtn bulb runs on 12v
at 20watt (don't know what the original was). New problem is that it
just isn't bright enough. The original bulb was way brighter. So...
I was thinking that maybe I could replace the bulb with a super-bright
White LED. The LED would give a more focused light, but I don't know
if this would be bright enough either. I know I could but a small
laser in it, but then it would always be the same color.

So, do you think I can replace the halogen bulb with an LED (with
appropriate current/voltage limiting), or do you think it would be
best to try to find a higher output bulb? 20A was the biggest I could
easily find, but I haven't exhausted the search (locally, I haven't
started online searching).

Is there some way that I can determine what the max current I can use?
FWIW, the bulb I have is a Philips Halogen Capsule (Q20T3/CL, 64425)

thanks all... may you all return to your synths.
