I wouldn't imagine either of those two things would be the problem.
Since you are new to this, let me be the one to welcome you to the
time-honored pastime of TROUBLE SHOOTING -- which generally
takes more time & effort (& is, in my humble opinion, more interesting)
than the building itself.
First thing you need to determine is:
is your MIDI-to-CV working correctly?
This can be determined by plugging your MIDI controller (a keyboard?)
into the input and playing a few notes up & down, while monitoring the CV &
Gate outputs with a meter (or another modular, if you have one handy). If
they are working correctly, you'll get a measurable,consistent voltage
reading . If not, you know to move on to the VCO section.
