    Looks like I am going to be answering my own question :-)

    The SL811HS (Cypress) costs ~$10 (1-99), the USBN9603 (National)
costs ~$4.00 and the PDIUSBD12 (Philips) costs about the same , ~$4.00.
The SL811HS is a bit more sophisticated than the National/Philips part
in that it supports 12mbps, although, 1.5mbps is nothing to sneeze at.

    It looks like it could make for an interesting project.  Trouble is
all parts are only availiable in surface mount (bummer).

    Also, one part from Cypress (Scan Logic) and one from National that
I looked at have been discontinued.  Heck, and they have only been out
for a couple of years!
