Yes. But, everyone knows that concrete is better and gives more flexibility
in driving habits.
But, seriously, MIDI is a blessing. It is a wonderful tool for storing
ideas when writing. What about Sysex? Where would we be without Sysex? Oh
sure, let's go back to analog tape drives. Duh!!
And, how about editing? Some of us operate at talent levels requiring
editing. MIDI sure helps. Limitations? Absolutely. Show me any digital
communication device / protocol that is 20-ish years old that still lives
and doesn't have some limitations or better technical solutions.
Should a new MIDI be developed? Absolutely, with backwards compatibility
(even if it is a master converter box to get from one side of the technology
to the other). But, we do have to thank the musical manufacturers for their
lack of attention to the potential for technical advancement. What if the
people that make PC hardware were in charge? Sure, we would have new MIDI
version 7.1 now which might work with version 7.0 but certainly with nothing
older than 6.5 with everyone forced to upgrade all their gear to the new
standard. Oh, wait! You cannot upgrade that $2000 synth? Too bad. Buy
new.
Sometimes, a slower pace of technical change has its rewards. MIDI is a
great tool. Does it contribute to bad music? Sure. BUT, so does the
electric guitar. That doesn't make guitars unsuitable for music (only
guitar players).
