this is the case for most of these.
however you can cheat ;-

click on electronics and look at the top circuit..
useing a D type flipflop...
Tie one output of the Rotary encoder to D, one to Clk...
Now use the one tied to clock as your RATE of turn, the Q output now gives
you direction, either 0 or 1!
Simple..
