may as well take this opportunity to ask if I'm the only one here who 
remembers the American Basic Science Club ("basic enough for the 
beginner;  rewarding enough for the pro") --

where I got my initial techno-weenie training (first tube socket I ever 
wired...)
(the only geek in my neighborhood with a weather station)
(never DID get the photo-microscopy kit)
