I have had the best luck getting rid of flash completely. I have found that
the tripod, and long exposure times coupled with as much diffused light
yields the best photos of circuit boards. Here is a sample of the results I
get without flash:

You have no trouble reading the resistor color codes or PCB screen. Looked a
little better before I turned up the jpg compression.

As far as the pictures, they look just as good as any of the ones I have
ever taken with a flash. One of these days I will figure out how to get rid
of
the glare. If I want to take a good picture, or I should say, a better than
normal one, I take the board outside and photograph it in the sun light.
The
shade is best....you just need to make sure the exposure is set right.
