In one UPS I was working on, we switched the 80 volts DC to the inverter
with a really heavy relay - however, when the (SCR) inverter was switched
off, and the relay disengaged, the current kept on flowing through the open
contacts, and the resultant arc would reduce the relay contacts to slag in
seconds. The solution was to keep the inverter running until after the relay
was disengaged.
