For huge PCB's like Jim Patchell does, I would definitely go with a
professional house to make them. For smaller one-off boards, you can do your
own.
If you're going to do your own PCB's, Circuit Specialists
(http://www.web-tronics.com/) is an excellent place to get materials. I use
their pre-sensitisized positive PCB's. I design with a PCB CAD program,
print onto a transparency with a laser printer, expose using a fluorescent
light, and etch in Ammonium Persulfate. I then use Tinnit to put a tin
coating on the traces. All the materials - etchant, presensitized PCBs,
etchant tank, Tinnit - is available at Circuit Specialists.
