[sdiy] Ion Vacuum Deposition

Well, anyone have any experience with these?

I thought that, as crazy as it might seem initially, that I could build one
of these machines..

A TV, with its scanning, seems just the thing!

I thought about hijacking an electron gun from a TV, replacing the electron
gun electrode with a piece of nickel or some other cool shiny metal, and
hooking a piece of plastic to be plated to ground..

Then, build a vacuum chamber to house it, pull a vaccuum, and turn the TV
on.. That way then, the little ions would shoot off of the plating
electrode, through the vacuum, past the scanning plates, and and slam into
the plastic, coating it with a thin layer of chrome like material.. The
scanning plates would ensure an even coating..

What do you all think? Think it would work? I got a good feeling about it,
but others might have other ideas..
