well, actually, I have a broadcast quality CD player with optical
digital out.  I would imagine that it is old enough to not be hassled
with the protection schemes, and since it's digital out, I should be
able to get a bit-for-bit copy.

A friend just bought a "neubauten" cd import that has the protection. 
It specifies on the packaging that it will not play in many CD ROMs. 
I think Macs are very succeptible to this as well.

I've read that many many cd's released in europe have this protection
on them, but of course, many people on this list would know better
than I.
