I worked at Serge's during the bumper-sticker as faceplates/Darryl Johansen
period when Serge was doing all the work for Tonto and he was in that place
at Western and Santa Monica you mention. Usually had to step over a few
sleeping people to get in in the morning. It was a great experience though -
a lot of great things were going on there then.
My first year at Cal Arts was the year after Serge had left and started his
endeavor. The way the story is told there, it wasn't so much a problem
with system time. Cal Arts had three Buchla studios then: B-305 (a huge
100), B-303 (a huge 200) and B-304 (a prototype 300 system. There is a
picture of B-304 circa about 1975 on the web at:

Notice the two Dolby B's on top. They were truly horrible. The patch chord
rack was made from a circle table forks. Anyway, you could always get into
one of the three studios - it was just a question of what time of day. The
problem was the affordablility to do Buchla-type things in a home studio
environment without the Buchla-type money required to do that. The
Tcherepnins did just that. They were extremely versitile and (back then)
very competitively priced. That part has all changed now, but they are still
great machines.
best,
