Got one for the "special" part section for you:
VB408 around ($)2.70(Euro)
The VB408 is a programmable 3 leg like the 317 but with a 1.25V to 370V
output range.
I(out max) is given as 60mA don't know at what voltage this is measured.
However 40mA @ 320V works ok :)
