I just have to add in on this socket thread...

I've used machined pin sockets for years.  Never had any trouble with retention
but I do one thing thats weird.  I tie the chips in with lacing tape.  Its
quick and easy to do.  I also use lacing tape on the wiring looms in stuff
I build.  Takes a little extra time to make it all pretty, but when its done
it does look damned pretty.  Why not use nylon zip ties?  First problem is if
they are put on too tightly they'll cause insulation displacement.  Second
problem is rarely do people actually use the proper tool for trimming the
ties and you wind up with a sharp edge that'll cut the crap outa you if you
arnt carefull.  I've had to get stitches a couple times thanks to nylon
ties hiding behind cable bundles that werent trimmed properly.

There's also something really zen about lacing all the wiring toegether.

Did I mention that it looks really good too? :-)
