[sdiy] Solder mask

Does anyone know how to remove solder mask from a PCB without damaging
the traces underneath?
 
I have a board where one of the pads has broken off and I want to be
able to solder a wire directly onto the trace to that pad, but it's
hidden under the solder mask.
