It does, at least I know they are still available here, as I'm sure they
aren't made in England :)

That's odd.  Perhaps I left off the "2N" or something.

I think you can get a wider range out of a 6027, but this wasn't a VCO.
Obviuosly, I haven't tried building it yet, but it looks like a divider
that produces a saw rather than a pulse.
