Re: using the 1408 - don't run it on +/-15V or you will fry it:  +15/-5 
is fine though. Also, remember the op amp needs to run on a split supply 
 (+/-15) unless you want really bad performance. Also check the logic 
levels on the pins to make sure they are within spec. I recently hooked 
one up with no problems. The AD7524 is another easy to use D/A that has 
a built-in latch, which can sometimes simplify the circuit.
