[sdiy] Digital keyboard interface

Hi all, i'm trying to build a digital keyboard
interface using a mc1408 d/a converter but i can't
even get the damn chip to respond (i'm a beginner at
analogue techniques but i know digital). Has anyone 
any experience of these chips and/or making digital
keyboard interfaces? 

This is a 8-bit d/a, i was thinking of dropping the
least significant bit thus getting 10 octaves + 8 keys
to play with. I thought of using a tranciever and a
short "decay" to prevent several keys from being
depressed at the same time.
