A slight correction there. The TX802 is 16 bit while the TX816 is 12. The
same as the original DX7. Trust me, Not only do I own both (Or did in the
case of an 816) but I can also quote from almost any Yamaha service manual
of that ilk.
And I disagree. The 802 sounds much better. (No noise and no aliasing
artifacts) And of course if you have my "NOT OUT" mod you even get an
effects send into the bargain.

You've just got to know how to use them.
And there's something to be said for Yamaha's statically assigned
polyphony. At least you know where you stand when you assign it. At least
you don't have notes dropping off the abyss. But with a larger number of
voices, dynamic allocation comes into it's own. And you'll note that Yamaha
went back to dynamically assigning voices with the SY/TG family that followed.
And another small point. The 802 has 8 individual outputs as well as left
and right. So if you do need to pan something partially left/right or
something, you can assign individual voices in a system patch to it's
corresponding individual output.
I don't do this because (A) I have a NOT OUT mod installed and (B) there
are far more interesting ways of getting a stereo image with an 802 which
in it self, makes the thing worth it.
