1) "security" is a word that is often thrown around on the internet, but
usually means nothing.
2) anytime a card is used (physically) at any merchant, they could just
copy the numbers from the card.
3) not that it would help in this case, but....

an added bonus of a fraud alert, is that it stops virtually all
credit-related junk mail.
4) avoid using "debit cards" AT ALL TIMES. if those numbers get hijacked,
you're in deep shit.
