Try CHIPS. Sure you can use a pic, '51, or FPGA like I just did, but add the 
drivers/latches, software design time & debugging, PCB space & complexity, 
and general headaches, $8.95 (which is only pumped-up "budgetary pricing" 
anyway) is damn well worth it to me. Especially for a one-off or low volume 
DIY project...
