the machine i think looks the best is an old Hickok test thing i bought in
germany. the original faceplate is metal with normal writing, but in germany
it was painted black and someone hand-wrote all the functions in german in
white lettering all around the knobs. in combination with the big lab-style
knobs it looks quite cool. i'm going to try to recreate the effect with a
small synth built around an sn76477 that i'm putting in a 'proper' 19 inch
rack panel..
