[sdiy] "Reports of DIY's death are greatly exaggerated"

I don't think DIY has died, it has certainly changed. DIY is more
sophisticated and the result is very impressive. The EN-76 DIY Synth series
often looked very "home-brew" rarely was "road-able" and was often done as a
"slaves copy" of MOOG systems. Look at how musically appropriate a lot of
the DIY approaches are now. Not just boxes but musical appliances or labs in
a box.

DIY now include programmatic efforts which used to be a very small community
in DIY and is now monstrously large (Linux, Menuet, FreeDOS in the OS
department, a plethora of eclectic application programs (i needed to build a
256 x 24 bit sine table, 1 click and downloaded a program from the net).
And what some Russian programmers are doing for the SBLive is just wonderful
(manual configurability and DSP access).

Upon the Internet i can see sites where a lot of people are building from
scratch basically everything, Robots, Laser Light Shows, Cars, Audio.

I'll bet that if it is true that the DIY Synth community is smaller than
let's say in 1977 (ElectroNotes heyday) I'll bet that the Ratio of Builders
to Finished Product correlated against Created Music is higher than then or
ever. I still have my old Electronotes Newsletters and the membership list
looks pretty small.

I hear really good Music from folks worldwide using methods, mindsets, and
equipment that is certainly in the best spirit of DIY. Since many of you are
those doing this i think you know what i mean. DIY is big not small, you
have many peers, and a majority of them a "click" away.

Sorry for the pontification, i have just felt very lucky to born into an
exciting era (3/31/54) that seems to be exploding with talent and the result
of great efforts by these talented people.

regards,
p
