Another alternative to this is to use brad tipped drills. I get
mine at OSH (this is in the US). They have a little point on the end of
the drill that drills the pilot hole, and the rest of the drill is
ground flat, which give you a perfectly round hole in the metal. Do not
purchase a spade drill by mistake (the description I gave would fit that
as well), these are regular twist drills, just the tip is ground
differently. I have even reground regular drills to this shape on my
own, but it is a lot easier to buy them alread ground. Using a brad
tipped drill helps to save a step.
