Apart from the Cool Edit program already mentioned, you could try SoundForge
with the Noise Reduction/Click Removal plugin or Steinberg Clean.
I only tried the SooundForge one and it's very good indeed.
The result will be based on how much sample time you have with only the
noise/hiss for th eplugin to take as a reference. It will then strive to
remove this reference signal from the whole of your record, without
significantly changing the original noiseless sound of the record (then can
be artifacts, but if you try out several parameters, you will find a setting
to suit your needs). You might have to settle for a good compromise.

Yash.

anybody recommend a good program for removing the pops and clicks from vinyl
recordings while converting them to CD? I'm trying to make CD copies of much
of my vinyl collection.
Also, does the success of these programs depend on the type of source
material? I'm going to be working with stuff like Thrill Kill Kult, KMFDM,
Pig, Minor Threat. Will I have more trouble converting less melodic/more
noisy material like these with good quality than, say, my copy of
switched-on-bach?
