This, otoh, is completely different. In most cases the rights to
intellectual property such as manuals belong to the company that developed
them, even if contracted.

Yeah, think this would be "work for hire". The company employing the writer
would hold the copyright. Not being an expert, couldn't say if the manual
writer would necessarily hold it now or if the manual becomes public domain
or what. Which begs the original question: who do you contact for
permission when ARP no longer exists?
(Was ARP bought out by another company . . . ?)
