Some of the early pipe instruments used water to steadily feed air
pressure into the pipes. A piston pumped air into a chamber filed with
water. The water was displaced by the air. When the air piston reversed
for the next pump, the weight of the water would continue to provide air
to the pipes.

These instruments were called the "Hydraulis" organs. They were
attributed to Ctesibius who lived in Alexandria in 265 BC, during the
reign of Ptolemy II Euergetes.
